food at missions

Food in the village of Prakraw is a simple affair. We are there for God's work after all, not to fill our stomaches with haute cuisine. Not to say that our food was bad! In fact, I thought it was really good!

Our meals are served in pots. It's a hearty helping of rice, a soup dish (usually with lots of vegetables) and a vegetable dish with bit of meat.

We would then scoop out food into bowls and then eat them with a spoon. This one has got preserved fish fried with eggs. We ate it the wrong way - with rice. It's supposed to be eaten with cucumber to neutralise the strong smell of preserved fish. But it was quite yummy nonetheless.

Fabulous fried rice for breakfast with carrots, egg and preserved meat.

Sometimes breakfast is porridge with bits of shredded chicken.

On our last day, the breakfast was particularly good! BBQ pork, fried chicken & melon with eggs. Shiok!

BBQ-ing the pork.

This dessert is really addictive. It's yam, beet root &sweet potato chunks, cooked with sago and what Hui Juan describes as squiggly thing that tastes like clumped up sago. The end result is a thick and hearty soup-dessert that is sweet, salty and a tiny bit sour. Love it!

Another dessert: Sticky sweet rice with green beans.

Pastor Joseph bought us all coconuts! Yum - but mine had almost non existent flesh when I cracked mine up. Sigh...

Our dear cooks!

the girl with a blouse

December 2008

This girl caught my eye with her big brown eyes. She had on a brightly coloured blouse.

December 2009

Still the sweet looking girl, colours on her blouse a little faded.

June 2010

She's grown prettier! But her blouse is dirtier and it's staring to show signs of wear and tear...

Does she only have one blouse? Perhaps it's her favourite blouse.
I guess I'll never know.

stewed pork noodles

Went back to the stall that sold the great dumpling noodles. Chose a different dish this time - stewed pork noodles.
At $4.50, it's $1 more expensive than the fish dumpling ones but not half as good. Sigh, is this stall a one hit wonder?

A late supper!

Strangely Singapore's red light district offers quite a lot of good eateries. Somehow, I ended up there (no not for the vices there) and I decided to try one of the famous dim sum places - 温道食.
Char Siew pao was fabulous!
Century egg & pork porridge was a good comfort food.
Loved the shrimp chee chong fun. Indifferent with their ha kao.
Fried dim sum were sinful....

This straw mushroom wrapped with beef slices dish was disappointing. It tasted blend!
Chrysanthemum tea is served in those take away plastic containers. Strange way of serving a drink because it's usually a container for soups. Anyway, the chrysanthemum tea was a bit strong for my liking.

Hmmm... considering that the place is quite hard to get to, the meal was also quite expensive, plus parking in Geylang is such a pain, I don't think I will be heading back there soon.

my favourite kids from Takeo's Prakraw village

I know we are not supposed to pick favourites and shower them with extra attention. But these kids are too cute to resist!
Uncle boy!
Pink nails boy!
This kid used to be extreeemly cute when he was a pint sized kid. Now he's grown up a little, but still quite cute lah.
A very pretty girl.

being a camera whore...

this one has got the beauty and the brains.

at a fraction of the price

A few months ago, I was longing for the Prada perforated knits. Then while surfing ASOS.com the other day, I saw something similar from Puma. Yes Puma, the sports brand, of all brands of clothes.
The perforations are not as big as the ones on the Prada knits. The Prada perforations are REALLY obvious and almost see through. This one is more like a light dusting of perforations. And the perforations are diagonal here - but the idea is there. It's a perforated sweater and I think it's pretty cool!
Too bad they don't have a grey version, if not I would most definitely get it instead of black coz I have already 1 or 2 black sweaters. And the 2 weeks wait for the package to arrive from UK was torturous!
But it's worth the hunt and wait. At £32 (it was on discount from the original price of £65) it is a fraction of the $1000+ the Prada sweater cost. Yay!

impressionless

Snapped this picture on my phone one day at lunch but I didn't have the time to write about it till now. And then I realised that I cannot remember how it tasted! It's neither fab nor drab. Perhaps a 4 or 5 out of 10. If not I would certainly remember the experience!

at the Mandarin Oriental

Attended a friend's wedding dinner. Shiokest wedding dinner food in a long time!

The appetizer was shrimp and lobster meat with melon balls. Yum!
The yummiest dish: Roasted pork belly. This is roasted pork belly at its best! The fat is meltingly good and the meat oh so tender! I devoured everything, fat and all. We all raved about this so much that even my friend, who was a vegetarian by choice, gave in and took a bite of the pork. And she finished the entire piece of meat!

Above is teriyaki cod fish. I thought it was a bit overcooked. The one below was chocolate lava cake. Consistency seems to be a problem with this dish. Coz some of the guests have lest when dessert came out, I had 2 helpings of it. My first one was quite dry, no molten chocolate sauce in the middle of the cake. But my second one was fabulous! Chocolate lava was oozing out from the cake when I sliced my cake. Yum!

A Dinner and a valuable lesson

Had a couple of willing friends over for dinner!

2 men trying very hard to rock a flowery and teddy bear apron...

frying the breaded chicken fillet

cooking is 50% skill and 50% patience

Initially the mash potatoes were overly salty. I couldn't serve it! Had to add more potatoes so that the saltiness was reduced. I think it's because I salted the water when I was boiling potatoes coz I hardly added salt when I was mashing it.

Fried Chicken

with the cherry tomatoes & baby spinach salad, makes Chicken Milanese.

serving everyone...

they were entertained

eating

Not very successful lamb. Firstly, I am convinced that the butcher at the market gave me mutton (as in adult sheep) instead of lamb. Secondly, I think I overcooked it.

Slightly better pork. Again, I asked for tenderloin, I don't know what I got from the butcher who doesn't know how to speak English. (sigh)

mid way feasting

lemongrass jelly that didn't hold its shape - too little gelatin?

the HIT among everyone: Chocolate Truffle!

Explaining to everyone the secret of my fabulous chocolate truffle: using aged Bailey's Irish Cream
(when I say aged, I mean expired... for 2 years)
All in all it was a learning experience. The most important lesson:
Buying stuff at the wet market is a lot cheaper than those higher end butcheries. But at the wet market, you have to know what you want! If not you really are at the mercy of the butcher.
