I remember a time when Kenny Rogers was just $9.90 for a quarter chicken and 2 sides. There was no service charge and no GST.
Those days are gone.
It's now $14.90, excluding a 10% service charge and 7% GST!
Food is still pretty much the same. Comfort food...
But service is not the same! We wanted to split the bill into 2 coz we ordered 2 set meals. The waitress tried to pull a quick one: If you split the bill, the GST will be higher, she said.
Nice try!

MacDonald's Chicken McGrill
I hardly ever step into MacDonalds for a meal. But late one Friday at 10, with a big group of us needing a place to eat with air conditioning, we had not much of a choice but go down to MacDonalds.
I must say, I am quite impressed with their Chicken McGrill. The best part of the burger is the sourdough bun. Soft and chewy and oh-so yummy. It really makes the burger! I hope they don't take it off the menu!

2 burgers
2 burgers over the weekend. One expensive, from a restaurant/pub; the other was cheaper, from a food center at the foot of a HDB.
De Berg is located at the foot of a HDB in Gim Moh. I must say I am loving this gourmet burger joint! Juicy beef patties and excellent buns. At $9, I think it's cheap for gourmet burgers. Next time, I might even bring myself to pay $20 for their Wagyu burgers!
On the other end of the scale is the burger from Brewerkz. Dry beef patty spoils this meal. At 3 times the cost of the one in Gim Moh, I think it's very pricy! Never ordering their burgers again.

Thai at King's
If I didn't remember wrongly, it's olive beef rice. Eating it is fun! We mix it all up with the rice at the bottom and eat!
Stuffed chicken wings.
The pad thai was good! Sweet, nutty, salty.
Green curry was creamy...
and dessert was coconut milk covered tapioca.
It's a little pricy, but it's quite yummy.

something's changed
Lately, I find that I am not attracted to desserts any longer.
I used to love my sweets - cakes, ice-cream, pies... I can have cravings! But now, their appeal is no longer there.
To round up my meal, I think I prefer something light, like cheng teng or perhaps a good cup of coffee.
Is it a sign of getting old??
This chocolate cake from PS cafe, swimming in chocolate syrup and served with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream doesn't rock my boat anymore!

Dry Mee Sua
My colleague brought me to this stall in Circular Road that is famous for their Dry Mee Sua. Mee Sua is usually served in broth so I guess it's something different.
I ordered a bowl and asked for no chili. So instead of chili, they guy emptied half a bottle of ketchup into my bowl.
I'm not kidding! The whole bowl of noodles was swimming in ketchup!
It turned out really salty and unappetizing.
Well, all's not lost in that meal, coz we spotted a stall selling taohu goreng and ordered us a plate. This turned out better. The peanut sauce was really yummy.

High Society
High Society has quite an attractive dessert fridge on display at their entrance.
I still haven't learnt my lesson - not to be judge a food outlet by their food display.
Their ice lemon tea was the cloudy kind. And was the best of the 3 items I ordered. BUT it came pre-sweetened. I mean, at an outfit like this, I thought it was understood that it should come unsweetened, with sugar syrup at the side. I felt bad sending it bad, but at least the waiter was nice about it!
Their dark chocolate moose cake was kinda disappointing. Not sinfully rich, it tasted quite blend actually.
Likewise for the strawberry cheese cake. The sweetness of the strawberry jam (from a jar I suspect) was way overpowering the cheesecake portion!
And stuff there are really expensive... Boo.

Thai food at Alexandra
My friend told me about a stall selling Thai food at Alexandra and I went to check it out. I must say, I was kinda disappointed.
For starters, I had their Mango Salad. It was in the words of my friend "not very appetizing" Not coz it was not tasty, but more because it didn't open up our appetites for the food to come. A little more sour would be nicer.
The basil leaves beef was pretty nice and tender. A tad oily for my liking.
Next up, stuffed chicken wings. I must say, this was one of the better dishes.
I'm always amazed how stuffed chicken wings are made! Fried to perfection on the outside and stuffed with nice things on the inside. Yum!
Pad thai was wayyy to sweet.
Unfortunately, I think they added too much MSG in their cooking. I felt so thirsty and uncomfortable after the meal - that feeling I get with too much MSG. No cool

eat a bowl of.... Lemon Chicken Soup!
The soup spoon is fast gaining favour with me. It serves up hearty bowls of soup, perfect for lunch on rainy days.
I tried their Lemon Chicken Soup and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome! The lemon wasn;t overpowering, just a hint of it.
As as usual, the chinky meat, potatoes and carrots were satisfying.

Char Kway Teow
I gym every weekday and I swim every weekend.
So I avoid junk food. Otherwise, all that time spent exercising would just go to waste!
That's why I am so pleased to hear that there's a fantastic char kway teow at Boon Lay market that's healthy (ok, healthier).
Fried with less oil, I am loving this dish! Instead of being fried with lard bits, it comes with a sprinkling of pork floss on top. Who would have thought it worked so well with char kway teow? 10 out of 10!

Ministry of Food at Marina Square
Loved their starters and desserts, not so enthusiastic about the mains....
Avocado salad with wasabi dressing. Yum! I always love avocados...
It's kinda hard to get ramen right. The soup base, the noodles, the egg, the char siew.. So many things go into a perfect bowl of ramen! So I am kinda skeptical about Japanese restaurants that serve ramen amongst other stuff in their menu. There are some shops that just specialise in ramen, I think those would serve up better stuff.
What I like about MOF is their dessert menu. This time round: a sundae with all the good stuff! Green tea ice cream, soft serve ice cream, some deep sea jelly, mua chee... yummy!
