food at missions

Food in the village of Prakraw is a simple affair. We are there for God's work after all, not to fill our stomaches with haute cuisine. Not to say that our food was bad! In fact, I thought it was really good!

Our meals are served in pots. It's a hearty helping of rice, a soup dish (usually with lots of vegetables) and a vegetable dish with bit of meat.

We would then scoop out food into bowls and then eat them with a spoon. This one has got preserved fish fried with eggs. We ate it the wrong way - with rice. It's supposed to be eaten with cucumber to neutralise the strong smell of preserved fish. But it was quite yummy nonetheless.

Sometimes breakfast is porridge with bits of shredded chicken.

On our last day, the breakfast was particularly good! BBQ pork, fried chicken & melon with eggs. Shiok!

This dessert is really addictive. It's yam, beet root &sweet potato chunks, cooked with sago and what Hui Juan describes as squiggly thing that tastes like clumped up sago. The end result is a thick and hearty soup-dessert that is sweet, salty and a tiny bit sour. Love it!

Pastor Joseph bought us all coconuts! Yum - but mine had almost non existent flesh when I cracked mine up. Sigh...
